Last weekend my friends and I took advantage of a Groupon for an aerial workshop. We didn’t really know what that would entail, but we ran around for weeks excited about our circus lessons. After checking the website, there was a possibility that we would be using the silks and the trapeze.
We got there a little early and there were kids there in the middle of their lessons. I was instantly jealous that I never got to take circus lessons as a child. And I was jealous that these kids were way better at this than I was going to be.
We changed clothes and proceeded to warm up and stretch a little. And then it was time to get started. There were about 15 or so people, which is more than I expected. I tried to stay with my friends in the beginning but had to move down to another silk because of time constraints.
We started off with a “simple” move of holding our body weight up. This was pretty hard. I have been doing a lot of strength training lately, but this made me realize that I still have a long way to go.
From there we wrapped the silk around our foot and stood up. Also harder than it looked. After we stood up, we were supposed to fall sideways and hold ourselves horizontal. I couldn’t really do this. It was frustrating to try to do these moves but just aren’t able to. I’ve worked hard to change my body, and although I’ve seen some results, sometimes it feels like I haven’t made any progress.
My favorite move of the night was one where we wrapped the silk around our shoulders and flew. I knew I’d feel it the next day, but it was so much fun that I had to do it several times!
And just like that, it was over. I was so glad that I was able to take this class. I may not ever get the opportunity to do it again, so I am glad I wasn’t too scared to try this.
And for the record, I was sore for three days after.
